Training Supervision in Ohio: What MFTs and Social Workers Need to Know
If you’re a Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT) or Social Worker in Ohio working toward independent licensure, you’ve probably heard the term supervision thrown around a lot. (Sorry counselors, we aren’t touching on that this time). But did you know that not all supervision is created equal? Let’s break it down, so you know exactly what you need and where to get it.
Training Supervision vs. Work Supervision: What’s the Difference?
Supervision can mean different things depending on the context. If you’re working in an agency, hospital, or private practice, chances are you have a work supervisor. This is the person who makes sure you’re showing up on time, handling cases appropriately, and not violating ethical or legal guidelines. Work supervision is job-specific and doesn’t necessarily count toward your licensure requirements.
Training supervision, on the other hand, is a structured, intentional process designed to help you develop the clinical skills required for independent practice. This is the type of supervision the Ohio CSWMFT Board requires for MFTs and Social Workers working toward their independent licenses. Unlike work supervision, training supervision must be provided by a Board-approved supervisor who meets specific qualifications.
What Does Training Supervision Cover?
Training supervision goes beyond just discussing cases. It’s a collaborative learning experience designed to help you grow as a clinician. Here’s what you can expect:
Case Consultation – Discussing complex cases and exploring different treatment approaches.
Ethics, Laws, and Rules – Understanding Ohio regulations and best practices.
Boundaries – Learning how to maintain professional and ethical relationships with clients.
Documentation and Treatment Planning – Ensuring your notes, assessments, and care plans meet legal and ethical standards.
Diagnosis and Intervention – Strengthening your ability to assess and treat clients effectively.
Professional and Business Development – Navigating career paths, private practice, and professional growth.
Who Can Provide Training Supervision?
Not just anyone can supervise your training hours. Your supervisor must hold the appropriate license and supervision designation from the Ohio CSWMFT Board. This means:
MFTs must be supervised by an AAMFT-approved supervisor or an MFT-S (Marriage and Family Therapist Supervisor) approved by the state board. For MFTs: Due to the low number of MFTs in Ohio, up to 50 of the required 200 supervision hours may be earned under the supervision of an Ohio-licensed LISW-S or LPCC-S.
Social Workers must be supervised by an LISW-S (Licensed Independent Social Worker with Supervision designation).
How to Find the Right Supervisor
Finding the right supervisor is about more than just checking a box—it’s about finding someone who aligns with your values, career goals, and learning style. When choosing a supervisor, ask yourself:
Do they have experience in my area of interest?
Do they offer individual or group supervision (or both)?
What is their approach to supervision? Structured? Flexible? Collaborative?
Are they available virtually or in person?
Why Good Supervision Matters
Good supervision doesn’t just help you get your license—it shapes the kind of therapist or social worker you’ll become. It provides a space to process difficult cases, reflect on your own growth, and gain the confidence you need to step into independent practice.
